Nigeria dominating at the Paralympics

Nigeria is doing itself proud at the Paralympics having already scooped up 9 medals at the half-way point of the games. This places Nigeria 10th on the Medals table and the top ranked African country. This is a significant improvement on it’s Olympic performance where it finished 78th having only managed to secure a bronze medal in the football competition. 1. A Nollywood actress wins gold and breaks record

By throwing a shootput 8.4m Lauretta Onye look the gold medal and also broke the world record! The Nigerian Paralympic gold medallist is also known as Laury White, a Nollywood actress who starred in the film Lords of Money in 2015.

2. Another gold and world record in Women’s Weightlifting

Lucy Ejike broke a world record on Sunday to win gold by lifting 142kg in the women’s under-61kg event. The 38-year-old wheelchair user has won three gold medals and broken the world record three times since she began competing in 2000. That’s an excellent acheivement!

3. Powerlifting dominates the Paralympics for Nigeria

Only one of Nigeria’s nine medals is not in powerlifting. So far it has won five Paralympic powerlifting golds, two silvers and one bronze. This can be added to 15 Paralympic powerlifting gold medals which Nigeria has won since 1992.
