The Best 5 Universities in Nigeria

Since we know that many online wars are waged because someone got offended by one ranking list or the other, we will outsource any future blame to The Nigeria Universities Commission (NUC), seeing as we’ll be expounding the best 5 universities in Nigeria based on their latest ranking. We are basically nodding our heads along to their official list while also showing you reasons why we agree with them.

1. The university of Ibadan

university of ibadan nigeria

Yes, this list would be bogus if this institution was not placed at the top. It is the premier university in Nigeria. It was formerly called The University College, Ibadan, but over the years, it evolved and got its current name. This school boasts of accomplished alumni to include Prof. Wole Soyinka, Chinua Achebe, Emeka Anyaoku, Elechi Amadi etc.

2. University of Lagos

Christened Unilag by the whole world, this elite institution is also an oldie like the number one school on this list. We hear good things about this school every year, and we don’t mean only the glitzy entertainment stuff that Nigerian blogs are wont to report. Every other day news filters out into the world that yet another Unilag brainiac had graduated with a perfect 5.0 GPA. This is no easy feat in a federal university. Notable alumni include Linda Ikeji, Stella Damasus, RMD, Funke Akindele, Genevieve Nnaji, etc.

3. Covenant University

This is the topmost private university on this list, but be assured that it is also a very popular one. The school is owned by the Living Faith Church, and because of this the staff and students have to abide by very strict rules that cover their dressing, social interactions even when they are off campus, and the use of electronic devices. These rules are not necessarily bad, seeing as the concentration on academics has ranked the school high on our list. Bez Idakula, Chef Fregz etc., all graduated from Covenant.

4. Obafemi Awolowo University

Located in Ile-Ife, this institution was established in 1958 just two years after Nigeria’s independence. If the accomplishments of former students contribute

to a school’s prestige, then we can boldly say that OAU deserves this place on our list. Some past students are Jimoh Ibrahim, Dele Momodu, Abike Dabiri and Biyi Bandele.

5. University of Ilorin

Unilorin recently made headlines when students received free PC tablets from the management of the school. Now talk about aiding learning! Unilorin was established during military government regime in 1975. Notable alumni include Nkem Owoh, Pius Adekanmi, and also Abdulahi Olatoyan, who recently made himself famous by being the smartest car window cleaner in Nigeria

Which university did you go to?
